Stuart M. Shieber to Lead Harvard's Office for Scholarly Communication

Stuart M. Shieber '81, Harvard's James O. Welch, Jr., and Virginia B. Welch Professor of Computer Science, will serve as director of the University's new Office for Scholarly Communication (OSC). Harvard University Provost Steven E. Hyman made the appointment, which he announced today with Robert Darnton, Carl H. Pforzheimer University Professor and Director of the Harvard University Library (HUL).

Online Now: Google Book Search for Harvard

Following an extended collaboration between the Harvard University Library (HUL) and Google, a Harvard-customized version of Google Book Search (GBS) is now online. This new version of GBS offers users the option to search the full text of all books available in Google Book Search—whether contributed by Harvard, another library, or the publisher.

Harvard's Libraries Launch "Contagion: Historical Views of Diseases and Epidemics"

February 2, 2008

New Contagion collection brings carefully selected historical materials from Harvard's renowned libraries, special collections, and archives to Internet users everywhere. Supported by Arcadia, the collection, which includes more than 500,000 pages of digitized books, serials, pamphlets, incunabula, and manuscripts, contributes to the understanding of the global, social-history, and public-policy implications of disease and offers important historical perspectives on the science and the public policy of epidemiology today.

Harvard's New Records Schedule Is Now in Place

September 1, 2007

As of September 1, the University has adopted a new General Records Schedule (GRS)—a publication of records management services in the Harvard University Archives. The new GRS describes and sets standards for the management and retention of University records. This vital document is relevant to every Harvard office and applies to records in all formats and media—both paper and electronic.

Robert Darnton Named Carl H. Pforzheimer University Professor and Director of the University Library

Robert Darnton, currently the Shelby Cullom Davis Professor of European History at Princeton University, will become Carl H. Pforzheimer University Professor and director of the Harvard University Library, effective July 1, 2007.
